Magical, Musical and Freaky!

Sarah Willey books a role in the Freaky Friday Movie Musical for Disney Channel.

Disney Channel is back at it again with another remake of a beloved classic this time as a musical.

Based on the recent stage version of Mary Rodgers’ 1972 novel of the same name, this TV musical will star Heidi Blickenstaff as Katherine and Dolphin Tale‘s Cozi Zuehlsdorff as her daughter Ellie, Blickenstaff is reprising the role she played during the 2017 stage run.

“A classic story like Freaky Friday has a magical capacity to engage multiple generations – whether it’s in the form of a book, a theatrical film, a stage show – or all of the above!” said Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer of Disney Channels Worldwide in a press release. “Working with our partners at Disney Live Theatrical, we’re thrilled to bring this classic story to life in a whole new form – a music-driven movie for television – that will be enjoyed by tens of millions of kids and families around the world.”

Freaky Friday has been a beloved story for years, with Lindsay Lohan, Jamie Lee Curtis and Chad Michael Murray starring in the 2003 film, but it was actually first brought on-screen back in 1976 in the popular Disney film starring Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster. Plus in 1995, Shelley Long and Gaby Hoffman played the lead roles in a Disney Family Movie for ABC, so there have been plenty of versions over the years.

The TV musical will be directed and executive-produced by Steve Carr, the cast also includes Alex Désert from “Let It Shine” who, will play Katherine’s fiancé Mike, Jason Maybaum from “Raven’s Home” as Ellie’s little brother Fletcher, Kahyun Kim from Austin & Ally who will play Katherine’s high-strung business associate named Torrey. Other cast members include Ricky He, Dara R. Moss, Jennifer LaPorte, Isaiah Lehtinen, and Sarah Willey. Pulitzer Prize-winning composers, from the stage production, Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, are back as the music-and-lyrics team.

When an overworked mother and her teenage daughter magically swap bodies, they have just one day to put things right again before mom’s big wedding. It is a hilarious, contemporary update of an American classic in which a mother and daughter really see what it is to be a family and experience each other’s lives first-hand, if only for a day.

The movie is set to make its debut in 2018 on Disney Channel.
