To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before Is an Extraordinary Rom-Com About Ordinary Teens starring Madeleine Arthur and Isabelle Beech.
Directed by Susan Johnson, the film is charming across the board—but it’s the story at its center, written by Han and adapted for the screen by Alvarez, that makes it stand out. Based on Han’s best-selling Y.A. novel, To All the Boys follows high-school junior Lara Jean Song Covey (Lana Condor), after her hatbox of love letters—one for each of the five boys she’s loved in her life—mysteriously goes missing. Our protagonist, who would much rather fantasize about love than actually fall into it, is suddenly forced to face her feelings head-on, navigating potential suitors including her middle-school crush, Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo), and her older sister’s ex-boyfriend, Josh Sanderson (Israel Broussard), while simultaneously dealing with all the other stressors that come with being a teenager.

This is the fifth iteration of “Freaky Friday,” but the first in telling the story through music on screen, with the musical numbers progressing the story as well as heightening the emotion of the actions of the story. Adding song and dance to the subtext of each scene, each character’s inner dialogue is emphasized and all the more relatable to the viewing audience. The story and the music gets a message across about empathy — and how the empathy we develop for our parents extends to the rest of the world.
Whether the medium is stage, film or TV, the “Freaky Friday” story tells the truth about the push and pull relationship between parents and kids – it’s a story that is ultimately optimistic with a fitting dose of sincere emotion.
The executive producers are: Steve Carr, Susan Cartsonis and Thomas Schumacher, president and producer, Disney Theatrical Productions (“The Lion King“, “Aladdin” and “Frozen” on Broadway).
