Magical, Musical and Freaky!

Sarah Willey books a role in the Freaky Friday Movie Musical for Disney Channel.

Disney Channel is back at it again with another remake of a beloved classic this time as a musical.

Based on the recent stage version of Mary Rodgers’ 1972 novel of the same name, this TV musical will star Heidi Blickenstaff as Katherine and Dolphin Tale‘s Cozi Zuehlsdorff as her daughter Ellie, Blickenstaff is reprising the role she played during the 2017 stage run.

“A classic story like Freaky Friday has a magical capacity to engage multiple generations – whether it’s in the form of a book, a theatrical film, a stage show – or all of the above!” said Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer of Disney Channels Worldwide in a press release. “Working with our partners at Disney Live Theatrical, we’re thrilled to bring this classic story to life in a whole new form – a music-driven movie for television – that will be enjoyed by tens of millions of kids and families around the world.”

Freaky Friday has been a beloved story for years, with Lindsay Lohan, Jamie Lee Curtis and Chad Michael Murray starring in the 2003 film, but it was actually first brought on-screen back in 1976 in the popular Disney film starring Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster. Plus in 1995, Shelley Long and Gaby Hoffman played the lead roles in a Disney Family Movie for ABC, so there have been plenty of versions over the years.

The TV musical will be directed and executive-produced by Steve Carr, the cast also includes Alex Désert from “Let It Shine” who, will play Katherine’s fiancé Mike, Jason Maybaum from “Raven’s Home” as Ellie’s little brother Fletcher, Kahyun Kim from Austin & Ally who will play Katherine’s high-strung business associate named Torrey. Other cast members include Ricky He, Dara R. Moss, Jennifer LaPorte, Isaiah Lehtinen, and Sarah Willey. Pulitzer Prize-winning composers, from the stage production, Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, are back as the music-and-lyrics team.

When an overworked mother and her teenage daughter magically swap bodies, they have just one day to put things right again before mom’s big wedding. It is a hilarious, contemporary update of an American classic in which a mother and daughter really see what it is to be a family and experience each other’s lives first-hand, if only for a day.

The movie is set to make its debut in 2018 on Disney Channel.

The Good Actor… Jilena!

Jilena Cori has wrapped shooting a role on The Good Doctor Episode #105.

The Good Doctor is an American medical-drama television series, developed by David Shore, based on the 2013 South Korean series of the same name. The show is produced by Sony Pictures Television and ABC Studios, with Shore serving as showrunner. The series began airing on ABC on September 25, 2017.

The series stars Freddie Highmore as Shaun Murphy, a young pediatric surgeon with autism and savant syndrome at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital. Antonia Thomas, Nicholas Gonzalez, Chuku Modu, Beau Garrett, Hill Harper, Richard Schiff, and Tamlyn Tomita also star in the show. The series received a put pilot commitment at ABC after a previous attempted series did not move forward at CBS Television Studios in 2015; The Good Doctor was ordered to series in May 2017. On October 3, 2017, ABC picked up the series for a full season of 18 episodes.

Shaun Murphy, a young autistic surgeon who has savant syndrome, relocates from a quiet country life to join the surgical unit at the prestigious San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital — a move strongly supported by his mentor, Dr. Aaron Glassman. Having survived a troubled childhood, Shaun is alone in the world and unable to personally connect with those around him, but he finds his niche using his extraordinary medical skill and intuition to save lives and challenge the skepticism of his colleagues.

With Freddie Highmore (Bates Motel) and Richard Schiff (The West Wing) on its bill, The Good Doctor isn’t lacking for star power.

But perhaps more interestingly, the new ABC drama is one of the highest profile series ever to shine a light on autism – a condition that makes communication difficult for an affected person, though can gift them with incredible powers of reasoning and intellect.

What An Explosive Talent!

Monique Phillips books a role on the Web Series “This Blows“.

Network: CBC
Executive Producer: Bruce McCulloch, Susan Cavan
Producer(s): Caitlin Brown
Director: Cole Northey
Writer: Bruce McCulloch

Storyline: This Blows is an 8 part digital miniseries set in the world of rainy, hipster Vancouver where the lead, Anna Gowen, discovers she can blow people up with her anger. A thoughtful, action-packed, female driven horror comedy series, This Blows will (quite literally) explode what it means to be a young, people-pleasing woman on a journey through discovering how to express anger. The show’s tone is grounded, odd, but believable. Amid all the gore, our character’s energy remains soulful, playful, and at times savage. A hybrid of Heathers with the unbridled energy of (say) Evil Dead, This Blows is an homage to the messy, low- budget gore of old-school horror films — this time with a modern feminist twist.

The show about an undead morgue attendant who assumes the personality of whichever brain she is eating and uses it to solve murders is one of the most consistently delightful shows on television. We would expect nothing less from Rob Thomas, who also created cult favourite Veronica Mars. Thomas runs iZombie along with Diane Ruggiero-Wright.

Rose McIver toplines the series, and stars alongside Malcolm Goodwin, Rahul Kohli, Robert Buckley, David Anders, and Aly Michalka.
The iZombie TV show is based on the characters from the Vertigo comic of the same name.

In season 4 the series will pick up three months after the big outbreak of zombies, and Seattle is now walled off from the rest of the world. The zombies and humans that are left in New Seattle are trying to live together. The population of humans is not nearly as high as Seattle used to have. Once the knowledge that zombies existed got out, there was a mass exodus — but not everyone could leave. Those that got stuck are the ones trying to survive.

Executive producer Diane Ruggiero-Wright explains that it’s even more complicated than that, as there are those in New Seattle trying to get out, but there are people outside the city who are sick and are trying to get in because they believe the cure is in the city.
